Downtown practice greens, traffic, and the lean you ignore
Grain on a municipal practice surface is not a myth invented to excuse a miss. It is poa plus feet plus a low spot. If you hole putts at Bellevue twilight and tape at noon on a basement rug, the ribbon is a tourist.
Inez Palladino walks down Salina from Armory Square and putts at twilight when the office lets her. The practice green she uses has a lean toward a drain and a second lean from the day’s traffic. Balls take the drain in the last two feet even when the first ten looked honest. A rail with too much drop adds rotation to that lean and the miss looks like pace. A banana that agrees with the drop can ride the lean like a cousin. Neither fact is visible on maple unless you tell us the hour. “I practice downtown” is not an hour. We cannot mow Bellevue into Suite 3. We can rake a strip of our winter carpet to mimic a lean when the story is specific. That is crude. It is still more honest than a flat indoor nap. Juniper will only rake if you name the nine and the clock. She will not rake for a vibe. A vibe is how people buy wings.
Poa grain in this county is shy compared with the southern stories golfers import from vacation. It is also wetter. Wet grain holds a line and then lets it go late. Dry grain on a downtown green in a windy May can be a rumor that only appears on downhill left-to-righters. If your miss collection is all of one shape, write that shape on the floor note. If it is every shape, you do not have a grain problem. You have a family that has not been photographed.
Printed mats at the indoor loops have no drain and no feet. They manufacture a moral rail. Golfers who live on those mats from December to March then visit a downtown green in April and declare grain a conspiracy. Grain was always there. The mat was a censorship tool. If you never hole putts on a practice green, say that. League cups on actual holes are a different file. We will not pretend a Saturday cup at Drumlins is a Tuesday drain at Bellevue. Specificity is the entire method. Vague grass is how hang numbers travel farther than they should.
