Juniper’s notebook

Pace is a season here, not a setting

A head that agrees with your banana on January carpet can look drunk on June poa. The path did not change. The skid did. We treat that as a window, not as a reason to buy a second personality.

Syracuse winters drive putting indoors. The carpets at the big loops are consistent, slightly slick, and utterly unlike a municipal nine in May. Balls hop, then roll. Frost delays in April add a third surface that takes no dent. If you only taped on one of those, your ribbon is a postcard from a single week.

The stimp window is fifty-five minutes against a path we already know. We are not re-litigating the family. We are asking whether the drop still agrees when the first three feet are a skid instead of a bite. Sometimes the answer is “leave the head, change the winter handle.” Sometimes it is “this quiet face only worked because the carpet was doing the squaring.” That second sentence is worth the clock.

Downtown practice greens grain toward low spots and afternoon traffic. They are not Augusta and they are not a warehouse. If you actually hole putts at Bellevue twilight, say so. If you only hole them on a basement rug, say that too. Juniper would rather have an ugly sentence than a heroic one.

January nap

Indoor carpet. Recuts live here. Bring the same shoes. Do not arrive in street gum and call it science.

June poa

Slow, wet, directional. The banana you hid all winter will show. So will a rail with too much drop.

Frost delay

A surface that refuses a dent. Blocks and leaves. Not a reason to panic-buy a mallet on a Thursday morning.
