January carpet versus June on the county nines
The big indoor loops are a mercy in a lake-effect town. They are also a liar. The nap is even. The first hop is clean. June poa is neither of those things, and your head will be blamed for the difference.
We tape a lot of golfers in January because that is when they can stand over a ball without gloves. The maple in Suite 3 is still wood. The rolls they have been grooving, however, happened on carpet. Carpet squares a face that wants to wander. Carpet hides a banana because the ball is gone before the curve finishes arguing. A quiet face can look like a saint on nap and a sulk on grass that takes a dent. Helen Cho’s recut in March is the example we keep: she arrived certain the rail was hers. The maple had been calling it a banana since November. The carpet had been doing her wrists’ homework.
June on the county nines is slow, wet, and directional. Poa leans. Traffic on the practice green adds a second lean. A ball that hopped then rolled in January now sits in a bruise and needs a different first three feet. If your drop was matched to hop, it is now matched to a memory. The path — banana or rail — is usually the same animal. The skid is not. That is why a winter recut is forty minutes, not a second personality test. We already know your family. We are asking whether the hardware still agrees when the ball has to get down.
People want a chart: “add two degrees of drop in May.” There is no such chart on this wall. Some bananas want the same drop and a duller handle because lake-effect air has polished the leather. Some rails want less drop because they have been muscling a quiet face on carpet and the muscle will not be there on a Saturday in Cazenovia. Photographs again. Not a calendar rule.
If you only ever hole putts indoors, say so on the floor note. Juniper would rather write “basement rug” than invent a municipal nine you do not play. If you live for Bellevue twilight and only visit the carpet to stay sane, say that too. The ribbon is allowed to be seasonal. It is not allowed to be theatrical. A head that only works from December to March is a winter tool. Treat it like one. Do not donate it to April and then write us about betrayal.
The maple does not change species between solstices. You do, a little, because your practice surface does. Recut the photographs. Do not recut your biography.
