Hang degrees are not the floor arc
A hosel can be balanced on a rail and assigned a number. That number is not the curve your wrists already draw on maple. Confusing the two is how a Charleston answer lands in a Syracuse attic.
Other honest rooms start with hang. They dangle a head, watch the toe, and speak in degrees. That is a real measurement. It is a measurement of hardware at rest. The floor arc is a measurement of hardware in motion, written on wood by a human who just climbed a Salina stair after work. Those two sentences can rhyme. They do not share a subject. Starting with the rest number is starting in the middle.
We keep seeing golfers arrive with a degree they were given in another city and a banana they have owned since college. The degree describes a quiet face. The banana wants drop. They have been muscling the quiet face square for a season and calling it “touch.” Indoor carpet cooperates. June poa files a complaint. Ellis can often find a drop that agrees with the chalk in twenty minutes. The previous degree was not a lie. It was an answer to a question this maple was not asking.
Radius lives on the floor. You can see it at station II, twelve inches back of the copper tick. A large banana is a wide curve. A tight banana is a small one. A rail is a curve so shy we stop calling it one. Drop must agree with that radius, not with a label on a website. Labels are furniture. Station II is a photograph. We will not argue with a photograph using a brochure.
There is a cousin confusion: face balance as the “opposite” of hang. Face balance is a rest state too. A rail golfer may want it. A banana golfer may hate it. Neither fact is visible until the chalk is down. If you came from a shop that treats rest states as personalities, you will find this room rude. The rudeness is the method. Maeve will throw away the first six rolls. Ellis will not open the drawer until the ghosts on the maple have been chosen by the head, not by your memory of a degree.
Write the hang number on the ribbon at the end if you want a souvenir. Write the family and the radius first. If those two lines disagree with the souvenir, believe the lines. The souvenir can live in a used barrel. The banana will still be on the wood next Tuesday.
