Lake-effect frost and the first roll that will not dent
April in this town still owes winter a few mornings. A green that will not take a bruise is not “fast.” It is frozen manners. Hardware that was honest in March indoor air will look theatrical until the plant wakes up.
Lake-effect does not only mean snow on the thruway. It means a long season of surfaces that refuse. Frost delay is the polite name. You stand over a ball that is sitting on a pane. The first three feet are a skid whether you asked for one or not. Rail golfers block it. They feel the pane and try not to add rotation, which adds rotation. Banana golfers flip it. They feel the pane and try to help the ball down, which the banana did not need. Two families, one weather. The head is rarely a new villain. The weather is an old one.
We do not tape on frost. Maple in Suite 3 is indoors; we could fake it with a stimp story and a dry board. We refuse. A ribbon written against a pane you will not see in June is a souvenir of a delay. Juniper will put “frost” in the notebook if you insist on describing those misses, and she will not change Ellis’s drop number because Tuesday morning was glass. Come back when the plant will take a dent. The chalk family will still be there.
What we will do is listen to the sentence. If every miss you own happened between 7:40 and 8:10 on delayed April days, that is a weather file, not a hardware file. If the same miss lives on wet June poa at 4 p.m., now we have a path. People blend those files because both feel like “the ball would not start.” Starting is not one verb. On frost it is a hop. On poa it is a bruise. Matching drop to a hop and then playing bruises is how quiet faces get cursed in May.
Maeve grew up skating Onondaga. She still treats ice as a working condition, which is why the north windows in Suite 3 are not covered. The light tells you what the week is doing. If the county nines are glazed and you still want to talk hang, we will talk chalk and send you home before you buy a mallet as an emotional support wing. Frost is not a sale. Frost is a delay. The maple will be here when the plant wakes.
Bring the liar in April if you want. Understand we may photograph and then refuse to open the drawer until a recut after the first real dent. That refusal is the work. A head bought against a pane is an attic object with a receipt.
